Funeral Service for Anya Bassett

Saturday, August 24 at 10:00 a.m

A funeral service for Anya Bassett will be held this Saturday, August 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the Union Church in Waban, with a reception to follow in the Vestry. Visitation will be from 3:00 -6:00 p.m. at the Burke & Blackington Funeral Home on Washington Street in Newton today, Friday the 23rd. We will be hosts to family, friends, and other loved ones from around the country as we all gather to remember Anya.

Please contact Pastor Amy if you’re able to help with setup or cleanup for the reception, or if you’d like to direct traffic for parking. If you are able to make the walk across the street safely, please park in the Angier School parking lot for the service so we can leave our lot for family and those who need accessible parking.

A link to Anya's obituary can be found HERE.

The service may also be attended online via Zoom - details can be found HERE.

Prayers of the People

Loving God, hear the prayers
of your people gathered in this community,

  • God, we lift to you the deep grief felt throughout our community following the sudden loss of beloved member Anya Bassett. May your peace which surpasses all understanding be made known to all who loved Anya. We pray especially for Jon, Ben, Sarah, and their whole family as they mourn and plan for her funeral.
  • We pray for Jackson, who died this week, and for his family, friends, and those who love him, including Kathy, Jaap, and their family. We prayed for Jackson in worship throughout this year, and now pray for him to be at peace with God after a long journey with cancer.
  • We pray in gratitude and excitement for all of our new college students, preparing to begin their first semester. We pray, too, for their parents, for students of all ages preparing for the new year, and for educators, support staff, and administrators who are getting ready to welcome students back to school.
  • We pray for Betty O’Beirne as she recovers from an eye injury, and for the entire O’Beirne family as they grieve Cindy, sister-in-law to Jay, and support Lois, Jay’s sister, through a medical crisis. Surround them all with your comfort, healing, and peace, O God.
  • We pray for Maddie B., that she may feel the love of God and the love of her church with her during what has been a difficult summer.
  • We pray for Beth and the Usher family, close family friends of Pastor Amy, as Beth seeks to make the best of each day, surrounded by love, in her journey with stage-four endometrial cancer.
  • We pray for Deborah Malone and her family as she continues to heal.
  • For all in our community who are traveling this summer: for traveling mercies, joy, and a safe return home.
  • For all in our UCW community who are ill, or who are caring for loved ones. For all who grieve, God, we ask for the comfort of your presence.
  • We pray for peace for your people all throughout the world. Teach us to beat our swords into plowshares, O God, and to sow wisdom and reap peace, justice, and joy.
If you have other prayers of concern or celebration you
would like lifted up in community, please email
Pastor Megan at [email protected].
