I never acted in or saw a Christmas pageant before coming to UCW. Unbelievable, I know! My church growing up didn’t do one, I always went home for Christmas when I was a member of First Church Somerville, and the other churches I’ve served either didn’t have one or it happened on Christmas Eve while I was elsewhere leading a different service.
|
So, I have absolutely no way to back up what I am about to say, but I think I get to say it anyway: the UCW pageant is the best. Delightful, intergenerational chaos really bringing the “joy” from Advent week 3 into “love” of week 4. Costumes available at the door for last-minute sheep and angels. A very good and very funny for-all- ages. script, courtesy of Jon Basset once again this year.
|
Katie has been working so hard on the pageant itself, and Karen and the choir on the music, and so I hope that you will all come and join me at what is truly one of the most joyful worship services of the year this Sunday. Bring friends — there is always room for more at our inn!

Loving God, hear the prayers
|
of your people gathered in this community.
|
- We pray for the victims and families impacted by the recent shootings at both Brown University and the Hanukkah festival in Bondi Beach, Australia. God, teach us to live in peace, and according to your ways of justice, mercy, and care.
- Continued prayers for comfort and strength for Betty O’Beirne as she navigates medical challenges, and prayers for Jay, Karen, Aiden, Buz, and the rest of their family as they support her.
- As the weather turns cold and the light fades in the evenings, we pray for all our siblings who are unhoused and sleeping rough. Protect and shelter them, O God, and may we be part of a great effort of providing shelter and safety this fall and winter.
- God, we ask that you would strengthen and care for our immigrant neighbors of all legal statuses who continue to live in fear and uncertainty amidst current immigration policies.
- For all in our UCW community who are ill, or who are caring for loved ones. For all who grieve, God, we ask for the comfort of your presence, especially in this tender season.
- We pray for peace for your people all throughout the world. Teach us to beat our swords into plowshares, O God, and to sow wisdom and reap peace, justice, and joy.
|
We pray to you, grateful for your accompaniment with us in all things. Amen.
