Annual Meeting
Following Service (Hybrid)
This Sunday, we will have our annual meeting following worship. This meeting will be hybrid. If you will join us on Zoom, you can stay in the Zoom room after worship as we transition to the Vestry. If you just want to join the annual meeting, you can use the Worship link on our website and (re-)join anytime. The meeting will probably start around 11:15 a.m. We will take attendance of those on Zoom, and you will also be able to ask questions and vote through the chat. For those who will be joining in person, lunch will be served as we gather around the table in the Vestry.
We will reflect on the year past, with reviewing and approving the minutes from last year's annual meeting as well as the annual report. And we will also get ready for the new year, by reviewing and voting on the Nominating Slate (based on our new by-laws!), and our budget for the coming year.
Lastly, we hope to give you a sense of the pieces we hope to be working on in the coming year. And of course we want to hear any questions or issues you would like to raise. So please join us!

GBIO Update: Call for turnout at GBIO’s late June Housing Justice Rally
Thank you, church family, for the emails and phone calls you made to our state senators imploring them to vote for the budget necessary to fix and maintain public housing in Massachusetts. The 5/17 Globe article about public housing in Brookline describes and illustrates the public housing crisis so well.
“Decades ago, Massachusetts went above and beyond when it came to housing its poorest residents, building tens of thousands of smaller public housing apartments on its own dime as a supplement to the larger complexes that were funded by the federal government,” but now these units are in a deplorable state of disrepair. Massachusetts has an obligation to maintain the public housing units it built.
GBIO was saddened to learn that the State Senate rejected Amendment #195, meaning that it is unlikely that the state budget for public housing will be anywhere near the $184 million that GBIO and other housing experts have deemed necessary. Clearly, state legislators have not made public housing a priority. Therefore, there is more work for us to do. In late June (exact date TBD), GBIO plans to have a huge in-person rally to continue advocating for a public housing budget that honors the dignity of diverse communities that make up our Commonwealth. We see this as a long game -- justice happens in steps -- and we are committed to fighting for our vision of a Massachusetts where everyone has access to a safe, decent place to call home. Let’s talk and plan, mark the date on our calendars, and arrange carpools.

Despite Newton’s image as an affluent suburb, too many of our neighbors struggle to put food on their tables. The Newton Freedge is one way we can help. A free, 24/7 outdoor refrigerator and pantry, the Freedge provides free food and personal supplies to anyone who needs them.
