Advent

Christmas Cantata on Christmas Sunday, December 23. We will have a special music service, featuring our Adult and Children’s Choirs, soloists, and guest flutist.

Christmas Eve Service with Children’s Tableau Monday, December 24th, 6:00 p.m. Our Christmas Eve service was moved from 7:00 p.m to 6:00 p.m. in response to the feedback we received through the deacon’s survey last year. In that survey two thirds of respondants said they prefered the service to be earlier than 7:00 p.m. We also heard from you that you wanted to have child care avialable and a place for parents to step out of the service with their children if needed. Both will be available this year.

Epiphany

Epiphany Service on Thursday, January 10th. Did you know that the celebration of Epiphany is one of the oldest services in the Christian tradition? During this intergenerational service we will remember how the three wise ones from the east followed the light of the star to the manger in Bethlehem. We will marvel at the light to the world, made manifest in Jesus, and consider how we are to shine forth God’s promise as we grow in hope, faith and love. We will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the vestry with a potluck meal. From there we have a procession bringing the light throughout the church before ending up in the sanctuary for the culmination of the service.

Union Church Mitten Tree:

Give a gift; share Christmas with a man in need.

Every December, The Union Church in Waban works with Project Care and Concern in Dorchester to create a mitten tree that extends the spirit of Christmas giving to those easily forgotten. Each mitten on the tree includes the name of a man living in transitional housing and a description of the specific gift he has requested. Having experienced homelessness, these men are often without family or networks of friends, and they ask for practical items–such as sweaters, jeans, fleece pullovers, hats, and gloves. The gifts we offer are likely to be the only gifts these men will receive this Christmas. The mittens, decorated by the church’s children, will be available on Sunday, December 2. Bring your wrapped gift, with the mitten securely attached, to church by December 16. If you have any questions, please contact Joanie Kelly, 617-584-3934 ([email protected]), or Annie Gatewood, 617-283-5798 ([email protected]).

This Christmas, please take a mitten from our tree and give a gift to let one man know that he has not been forgotten.

Meditation Workshop: Preparing for Advent

How do you feel when you think about Advent approaching? Is it a time you look forward to, when you are able to make the gifts of this season part of your life? Or do you feel a bit stressed just mentioning that time of year, which is also often the most busy and emotionally demanding? Regardless of where you are on the spectrum of feelings about Advent, we invite you to come discover some ways that will help you live the season rather than feeling like you are blasting through it.

Whether you’ve never practiced meditation, have had a practice for years, or have started and stopped many times, this is a time to discover some user-friendly techniques that can help your mind, body, and spirit feel more in sync. And we’ll look at some simple but meaningful devotional forms that individuals or families and children can practice to live more deeply into the season.

The last session of this series will be held on Saturday morning, December 15 from 9 to 10 a.m. Please contact Kathryn at [email protected] for further information.
