Updates for September 14, 2012

We will continue the practice of having our prayer book at the back of the church for those who have prayer requests but would prefer not to speak them aloud.

Apple Picking! After church next Sunday, September 23rd, we’re going apple picking at the beautiful Nagog Hill Orchards in Littleton, MA. Bring a picnic blanket and a bag lunch. The Mission and CE Committees will provide drinks and snacks. The orchard takes cash only and there are no ATM machines around, so come prepared. We’ll donate some of our apples to the Newton Food Pantry. Let Kathy know if you plan to come, if you can drive (how many), or if you need a ride (how many). We should have rides available even for kids who come without parents. Permission slips and directions are available from Kathy. Friends are welcome!

Prayer Group will meet Monday, September 17, at 7:30 a.m. in the side chapel.

Wellspring, our Women’s Group, starts off the year with a gathering Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. A light supper will be served, followed by a time of reflection, sharing, and prayer.

Java Gents, will meet Friday morning at 7:00 a.m. This first meeting is dedicated to the memory of Stu Laughlin. In the spirit of Java Gents please bring your favorite Stu story to share. We will have a moment of silence, and thoughtful prayers for Stu (who will be greatly missed this year).

The Mission and CE Committees are sponsoring a ‘back to school’ and winter clothing drive for Cradles to Crayons, now through September 23. Drop your donations in the box in the Crocker Chapel. The following is a list of especially needed items:

Cradles to Crayons Volunteer Day September 26 Join us from 10:00 a.m.- noon on Wednesday, September 26 working at the Giving Factory, C2C’s large, bright, welcoming warehouse in Brighton. We’ll be organizing donated clothes, toys or supplies for needy kids. Anyone aged 5 years or older is eligible to join us. September 26 is Yom Kippur, so it is a school holiday in Newton. We’ll leave Newton by 9:30 a.m. and return by 1:00 p.m. If you’d like to go, need a ride, or can give a ride, let Kathy Malone know. We need to give C2C a volunteer count soon, so if you’re thinking of going, please RSVP.

Most fundraisers cajole us into buying low quality stuff that we don’t need or want – not this one!

When you order from Close Buy in support of Communities Without Borders, you are also supporting New England artisans and crafts people. Shop online (www.closebuycatalog.com), or grab a catalog – they will be available at reception, fill out the order form, give/send a check to Communities Without Borders, 842 Chestnut St. Waban, MA 02468, and 30% of your purchase will go directly to educating children in Zambia. If you live in or near Newton you can pick up your purchases and avoid shipping costs. All items will be available or shipped by the beginning of December. Get your holiday shopping done early – this is only available for the month of September. Thank you for your support! Questions? Ask Annie at [email protected]
